If you make your bed daily, change your bedding weekly and follow a regular vacuuming and dusting regime, you may feel that your work in the bedroom is done. But by following our bedroom cleaning tips, you will flush out nasties you didn’t even know you were there. Your bedroom should be your relaxation haven, but did you know it is also a haven for allergens such as dust, dust-mites, mould spores and more? Yikes!

Don’t worry, a deep clean will have you breathing easier and sleeping easier too. It’s also a project that can be completed in a single afternoon (unless you need to declutter too).

When was the last time you put your pillows in the wash, or steam cleaned your carpet? Can you remember the last time you vacuumed your mattress and behind heavy furniture? If you’re struggling to remember, it could mean that it’s time you cleaned your room.

We know that harsh chemicals and store-bought cleaning sprays can often contribute to indoor air pollution, so resist the urge to employ an arsenal of disinfectants, sprays and more and instead opt of natural alternatives.

Here’s how to deep clean your room.

THE BED

  • Pile up blankets, pillows, curtains and mattress and pillow protectors and sort into piles that need to be washed, dry cleaned, replaced or aired.
  • If it’s a warm, dry day, consider pulling your mattress out into the sun where it can air out. Sprinkle it with a little bit of bi-carb soda to remove any unpleasant odors.
  • Vacuum mattress with brush attachment, focusing on any piping and other crevices.

THE FLOOR

  • Vacuum floor, including under the bed and furniture. Use attachments to get into tight spaces.
  • For wooden floors, follow up with a light mop using a gentle floor cleaner.

SKIRTING BOARDS AND CORNICES

  • Dust and wipe down light fittings, ceiling fans, skirting boards, picture rails, tops of doors and hanging frames. You’ll be amazed at how much a microfibre cloth will pick up.
  • For cornices, you may need to grab the step ladder and wipe with a damp cloth. If you don’t have a step ladder handy, grab your vacuum, extend the wand, and using the brush attachment, vacuum the dust.

SURFACES

  • Dust and clean all surfaces with a natural spray cleaner or a damp microfibre cloth. Don’t forget light switches.
  • Give mirrors the once-over with a solution of methylated spirits and water (1/4 cup to 1/2 bucket of water). Don’t use newspaper as the ink may smudge.
  • Wardrobes can often harbour nasties such as mould and dust. Clear the floor and vacuum away any dirt and debris.
  • Wipe down shelves with a solution of vinegar and water. Allow to dry completely before putting clothes away.
Wardrobe design
  • Replace any moisture absorbers and fragrance sachets if required.
  • If, while cleaning your wardrobe you find that mildew is a problem, check out our guide to removing mould and mildew.
  • Wash windows inside and out. Use a squeegee to get a streak-free finish.
  • Wipe down any sliding window or door tracks as these tend to be a haven for dust.
  • Wipe or dust down blinds with a soft, clean brush. Brush away any cobwebs from ceiling corners.
  • Remove curtains from the curtain rod and machine wash with a mild detergent. Allow to dry completely.
  • Detach any ducted air-conditioning vents and wash them in a solution of vinegar, soap and water. This will dissolve grime and wash away any surface dust. Dry vents thoroughly before putting them back into place.
  • If you have a reverse-cycle air-conditioner, you may need to clean the wall unit.

Conclusion

Now that you know the steps, make your bedroom tidying routine run smoothly with this easy-to-follow room cleaning checklist.
